Autumn Owl Walk

Come and walk in the woods at the VIC and see whooo’s calling. Participants will learn owl natural history, call notes, and how to listen for calling owls. Bring a flashlight or headlamp to help guide your way. Please dress appropriately for being outdoors at night. The cost is $10/person or $5 for Friends of the VIC. The program starts at 7:30 PM. Paul Smith came to the Adirondacks from Vermont as a young man, built a rustic resort on the shores of Saint Regis Lake, established a reputation as a guide, hunter, storyteller, and hotel proprietor, and – after his death – gave his name (through a bequest by his son) to Paul Smith's College. One of the many obituaries marking his death in 1912 noted: "..there is one section of the Adirondacks that will have as hard a time in shaking off Paul Smith's name as it would have in shaking off the woods and crags." Find out more about this quintessential Adirondacker. Join Neil Surprenant, former director of Library Services at Paul Smith's College and author of Paul Smith's Adirondack Hotel and College: Images of America, as he describes the life and times of this region's early pioneering entrepreneur. Quilt Workshop: Disappearing Nine Patch

Easily construct a quilt pattern with a complex appearance by piecing together quilt blocks made from simple nine-patch blocks. Different arrangements plus varied fabric choices yield striking patterns. This is a great project for a beginner or anyone who wants to create a quick and attractive quilt.

New Moon Art Show: VIC Paint Out

Invited Plein Air painters will be out painting at the Paul Smith's College VIC over Labor Day weekend (5-7 September 2015). The artists will then frame up their wet paintings and hang the show. The show will hang from 13 September through 12 October. All paintings will have been done on the VIC property. There will be a reception on 13 September from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Free admission.
Premiere of The 46ers Documentary

This film is a documentary on the ADK high peaks and the people who climb them by film maker Blake Cortright and Arche Productions. There will be a pre-screening reception with light fare, soft drinks and a cash bar for beer and wine, and a meet-and-greet with filmmaker Blake Cortright of Arche Productions along with the documentary cast and crew. Adirondack Plein Air Festival: Paint the VIC Day

Tuesday, 18 August is "Paint the VIC" day, when artists will take advantage of the natural settings on various VIC trails: mountains, old growth forest, bogs, streams, marsh, beaver lodges, and Adirondack lean-tos.

The VIC is hosting a One-Day Yoga Retreat on 24 July and again on 7 August. The retreat will promote physical, mental and spiritual health. Yoga sessions, breath work, meditation, and unstructured time in the natural environment will support the participants self-inquiry as they let go of the details of daily life and discover the peace and connectivity of their unencumbered being. Explore the eskers, kettle ponds, kettle holes, and glacial erratics found on the VIC property. Learn about the types of rocks found in the area and how to interpret the inter-relationships of natural features and historic glacial activity. Participants will meet at the VIC building at 9:30 AM. Garden Basket Weaving Workshop

Join Clear Creek Weavers Sandy Muller and Bud Ziolkowski for a fun, educational and productive day at the VIC. Sandy and Bud are self-taught splint-style basket weavers. The garden basket that we will make in class measures approximately 24” x 10” x 8” with an oak handle. You will be given all of the materials and the expert instruction needed to build your own. The cost of the class is $70; $65 for Friends of the VIC. Registration is required by 5:00 PM on 14 July. A minimum of six people is required.

Part of the prize is a show at the Paul Smith's College VIC, one of the Plein Air Festival's painting sites. The theme of the show is Nature and Wildlife. Invasive Species Awareness Week

New York State is organizing its Second Annual Invasive Species Awareness Week from 12 to 18 July 2015. During this week, join us at the VIC for our interpretive walks and discussions about the spread of invasive species around the Adirondacks. Our daily naturalist walks will feature different topics and be co-led by folks from the Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program and the Adirondack Watershed Institute.

Wear your red, white, and blue to celebrate the U.S.A. at Paul Smith’s College VIC! This trail run will take place on the network of wooded trails, different from the Jenkins Mountain Scramble. All proceeds from the race will be used to support the VIC – a vital community resource for environmental education, recreation, and the arts. This event is part of the 2015 Adirondack Trail Race Series, hosted by the Paul Smith's College VIC and High Peaks Cyclery.

Join Wild Edibles instructor Pat Banker, from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, to learn how to identify wild edibles, while exploring the history, culinary uses, and historic medicinal uses of many of the plant species found in the Adirondacks. Each walk will last approximately two hours, with a follow-up in the VIC Building to sample flours made from white pine cambium, dandelion, and red clover. Mushroom Walks

Join mushroom expert Susan Hopkins for a casual walk in the woods to look at all mushrooms and fungi. We will discuss and identify poisonous and edible species and point out some of medicinal value too. This walk will take at least 2-2 ½ hours and be held rain or shine. All walks start at 10:00 AM. Bring a lunch if you want to stay longer after the foray. Summer Fun Trail Runs

We’ll keep you on your toes and on the trails every other Wednesday when you participate in the VIC's Summer Fun Trail Run Series. The bark mulch trails and grassy service roads at the 3,000-acre VIC make ideal conditions for trail runners to get out and enjoy a run in the woods. These 5K trail runs start 24 June 2015 and end with the 2 September race. Courses will vary each week. These events are part of the 2015 Adirondack Trail Race Series, hosted by the Paul Smith's College VIC and High Peaks Cyclery.

This two-hour trip, which starts at 10:00 AM, provides a chance to explore the varied aquatic habitats at the VIC. The price is $20 per adult; Friends of the VIC: $15 per adult. The Paul Smith’s College VIC will host a Juried Art Show from 16 June through 15 July 2015. An artist reception will be held on 21 June from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The theme of the show will be “Life on the Lakes.”
Native-species Butterfly House Opening
12 June 2015
Adjacent to the VIC Building is the Breck Chapin Memorial Native Species Butterfly House, featuring butterflies and moths in all stages of development. Visitors can view native butterflies up close and learn about the life stages and migratory patterns of these colorful insects. The Butterfly House is open from 10 AM to 4 PM, seven days a week throughout the summer, weather permitting. The Butterfly House will be open this year from 12 June through Labor Day. Admission to the VIC Butterfly House is free. However, if you would like to make a donation to fund projects to make the Butterfly House even better, there is a donation box at the exit.
International Birch Sap and Syrup Conference

The Adirondack Center for Working Landscapes has partnered with Cornell University Cooperative Extension to host the first International Birch Sap and Syrup Conference at the VIC. 13th Annual Great Adirondack Birding Celebration

Celebrate the boreal birds that make the Adirondack Mountains their summer home. This is a chance to see the Bicknell’s Thrush, Black-backed Woodpecker, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Gold-winged Warbler and more. Beginning birders welcome. The three-day events includes two all-day birding field trips on Friday (“Birding Across the Adirondacks” and “Birding the Saint Lawrence Valley”), a choice of Saturday and Sunday morning field trips to boreal birding hot spots, a keynote lecture featuring Chris Rimmer from the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, an art exhibit, workshops, and more.

Citizen Science Training Workshop II – Outdoor Observation

This second workshop in the Wetland Detective public training series builds on the information on wetland plants, birds, and amphibians learned in the first Wetland Detectives Training Workshop. However, if you were unable to attend either of the earlier workshops, that’s OK! You are still welcome to join the wetland monitoring corps. This second workshop, which runs from 9:00 AM to noon, will be outdoors. You will have the chance to explore a nearby wetland site where you will practice amphibian, bird, and plant monitoring skills.

New Moon Art Show: Photo Shoot-out
24 April - 17 May
Twelve local photographers have accepted the challenge to participate in a photo "shoot-out" to be held at the VIC from 17-21 April. The shoot-out coincides with the Science, Art and Music Festival on 18 April. The photographers have four days to take photos anywhere within the VIC's 3,000 acres. Each photographer will display three framed photos in the show. The exhibit will hang from 24 April through 17 May 2015. There will be an Artists' Reception on 26 April from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Free admission.
Science, Art and Music Festival

Paul Smith's College will hold a day-long festival celebrating Science, Art, and Music in Paul Smiths on 18 April. The event features musical performances by North Country musicians Peggy Lynn, Dan Berggren, Celia Evans, and Jamie Savage; presentations on Adirondack climate-related topics; a presentation on the faith community and climate by Catholic Climate Ambassador Gerry Gacioch; traditional folk and visual arts; maple syrup and refreshments; and a showing of "Butterflies and Bulldozers" – a powerful documentary on land stewardship in the San Francisco Bay area.
The SAMFest Exhibition: Art Exploring Climate Change

The Paul Smiths VIC is hosting an exhibit of visual arts exploring climate change; the exhibit coincides with the Science, Art and Music Festival on 18 April 2015. Regional visual artists interested in climate change have been asked to experiment with embodying a thought, concept, emotion, or insight. The exhibit hangs from 17 to 21 April 2015.
Quilt Workshop: Mile-a-Minute Quilting

Quilts are fun and fast to make when you create your own fabric out of scraps! Bring all your scrap fabric to this all-day workshop led by Karen LiVecchi and learn this easy method to quickly sew them into blocks. Then use these blocks to create a tote bag in class. A great way to use up scraps!
No School Days at the VIC: Spring Break

Come to the VIC to learn and play! We will explore a variety of subjects related to the season; and what an exciting season it is! We will spend our time listening to the sounds of the early spring forest, finding tracks, enjoying the discoveries from under winter’s blanket of snow, and creating our own adventures. Pre-registration is required for each day. Reserve a spot by 5:00 PM on 27 March by calling 518-327-6241, or emailing VIC Educator Deb Paradis. The fee is $35 per person, $25 for Friends of the VIC.
