Naturalist-led Wildflower Walk:
Wild Orchids at the VIC
Sunday, 28 June 2015
1:00 PM
Join a VIC naturalist for a walk along our bog trails to discover the exotic beauty that orchids reveal in their amazing shapes and colors. Late June is a particularly interesting time to study wildflowers, because the orchids that flourish in the acidic habitat of Barnum Bog are coming into bloom. The bog is accessed by a 1,600-foot boardwalk, which provides close-up view of these fascinating plants. Orchids and other wildflowers and flowering shrubs in bloom around this time on Barnum Bog include:
Cotton Grass (Eriophorum) | Sheep Laurel (Kalmia angustifolia) |
Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea) | White Fringed Orchid (Platanthera blephariglottis) |
Rose Pogonia (Pogonia ophioglossoides) | Grass Pink (Calopogon tuberosus) |
Yellow Pond Lily (Nuphar lutea) | Marsh Cinquefoil (Comarum palustre) |
We'll meet at the VIC building at 1:00 PM. The walk will last about two hours. The cost of the walk is $20 per person, $15 for Friends of the VIC.
