Armchair Traveler Lecture: Mt. McKinley/Denali

Join Jack Drury at 7:00 PM for a slide show focusing on one of the first 100 attempts to scale the highest mountain in North America: 20,320 ft. Mt. McKinley in Denali National Park, Alaska. This was one of Jack’s first major adventures. In 1971, while a senior in college, Jack joined the National Outdoor Leadership School for its first attempt to climb this challenging peak. Astronomy Night at the VIC

Quilt Workshop: Tree of Life Quilt Blocks

In this workshop, you will learn techniques for making half-square triangles quickly and accurately, and then use these units to piece the Tree of Life quilt block. This simple yet striking block will be used to complete your project as a pillow, a wall hanging, or as part of a larger quilt. Construction of other quilt blocks using the half-square triangles will also be explored. Workshop hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The cost is $45.00. Preregistration is required. Skate Skiing Clinic for Beginner and Intermediate Skiers

Before you put those skis away, improve your technique with experienced ski instructor and coach Sean Burke.  Sean grew up skiing in Paul Smiths and has coached locally with the NYSEF program.  His career has taken him to Anchorage, Alaska and Gunnison, Colorado.  He competed at the Division 1 collegiate level at Western State College in Colorado.  Sean has worked with beginners, intermediates, and experts.  He will give you pointers to make your skiing more efficient and enjoyable.  The clinic begins at 10:00 AM. Winter Birding Trip to the St. Lawrence Valley

Join the Adirondack Birding Center on a trip to the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River and surrounding agricultural fields near Massena. The van trip will take us to raptor-rich fields and active waterfowl gathering places along this very productive river valley. We'll search for buntings, sparrows, hawks, ducks and much more during this all-day outing. Floyd Lampart, of Lake Clear, circumnavigated the United States on a bicycle as part of his "Pedaling for Paws" fundraiser for the Tri-Lakes Humane Society.  He pedaled 11,346 miles, returning home on 2 September 2013. Floyd will present a slide show and answer questions about his epic journey.  A portion of the nights proceeds will be donated to the Tri Lakes Humane Society.  Admission is $5 per person.  Friends of the VIC and VIC Ski Season Pass holders are Free.  This program is underwritten by the Friends of the VIC

VIC Natural History Training: Project Feeder Watch

Learn local bird identification and help the VIC count birds at the VIC feeders on Fridays and Saturdays mornings. Interested volunteers are invited to a training session on 16 November, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Project Feeder Watch is operated by Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology. The VIC's involvement in the program is underwritten by Friends of the VIC.

No-School Day at the VIC: Preparing for Winter

Children aged 7 - 11 are invited to join VIC ecologist/naturalist Michelle Berrus from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM to explore nature’s winter preparation and survival.  Please dress appropriately for indoor and outdoor play and bring a lunch and snack.  Preregister by 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 by calling (518) 327-6241. $35/person, $25 for Friends of the VIC

Explore the Trails

The VIC trails are free and open to the public, from dawn to dusk, spring through fall. In winter, the trails are open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers for a fee. Day or season passes may be purchased.
