Project FeederWatch
Friday and Saturday Mornings, November 2013 - April 2014
Training session: 16 November 2013, 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Assist the VIC in counting birds Friday and Saturday mornings at the VIC feeders. The VIC has a preset (two day) period of Friday and Saturday mornings from November through April to count feeder birds for Project FeederWatch -- a citizen science project operated by Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology. Volunteers monitor the VIC feeders from the comfort of the VIC Great Room and Sunspace Gallery, then fill out data sheets for VIC staff to enter into the Cornell data base. Interested volunteers and Friends of the VIC are invited to a training session on 16 November from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Project FeederWatch is a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders at backyards, nature centers, community areas, and other locales in North America. FeederWatchers periodically count the birds they see at their feeders from November through early April and send their counts to Project FeederWatch. FeederWatch data help scientists track movements of winter bird populations and long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance.
Birds which can usually be seen at the VIC bird-feeders during the late fall and winter include:
- Black-capped Chickadee
- Blue Jay
- Downy Woodpecker
- American Goldfinch
- Hairy Woodpecker
- Dark-eyed Junco
- Red-breasted Nuthatch
- Evening Grosbeak
- Pine Siskin
- Purple Finch
This program is underwritten by Friends of the VIC.
