Adirondack Wildflowers: Common Wood Sorrel on the Boreal Life Trail (23 June 2012), Rose Pogonia on Barnum Bog (6 July 2012), and Twinflower on the Barnum Brook Trail (9 June 2012) Adirondack Wildflowers: Common Wood Sorrel on the Boreal Life Trail, Rose Pogonia on Barnum Bog, and Twinflower on the Barnum Brook Trail

Bask in the floral beauty of the VIC trails and learn more about flowering plants on a wildflower walk with a VIC naturalist. Late June is a particularly interesting time to study wildflowers. The orchids that flourish in the acidic habitat of Barnum Bog are coming into bloom. The bog is accessed by a 1,600-foot boardwalk, which provides close-up view of these fascinating plants. Orchids and other wildflowers and flowering shrubs in bloom around this time on Barnum Bog include:

Cotton Grass (Eriophorum) Sheep Laurel (Kalmia angustifolia)
Pitcher Plant (Sarracenia purpurea) White Fringed Orchid (Platanthera blephariglottis)
Rose Pogonia (Pogonia ophioglossoides) Grass Pink (Calopogon tuberosus)
Yellow Pond Lily (Nuphar lutea) Marsh Cinquefoil (Comarum palustre)

Many of the summer wildflowers that prefer a mixed conifer/hard wood habitat are also blooming around this time. Look for the these plants blooming or in bud in the VIC's mixed forest habitats:

Common Wood Sorrel (Oxalis montana) Partridgeberry (Mitchella repens)
Shinleaf (Pyrola elliptica) Spreading Dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium)
Twinflower (Linnaea borealis) Wild Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)
Dewdrop (Dalibarda repens) One-sided Pyrola (Orthilia secunda)

The cost of the walk is $20 per person, $15 for Friends of the VIC. Preregistration is required by 5 PM on 28 June.
