On 10 July, VIC naturalist Sarah Keyes led a nature walk focused on Adirondack wetlands.  We focused on three different types of wetlands: marsh, bog, and swamp.  The walk covered the Heron Marsh Trail, the old Blue Dot Trail, the Barnum Brook Trail, and the Boreal Life Trail.  Highlights of the walk included some excellent views of a Common Yellowthroat on the margins of Heron Marsh, from an overlook.  We also observed a host of Ebony Jewelweed damselflies fluttering around the bridge over Barnum Brook.

On the Heron Marsh Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Red-eyed Vireo Black-capped Chickadee
Common Yellowthroat Swamp Sparrow
Hermit Thrush Blue Jay
Ovenbird  

 

On the Barnum Brook Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Common Yellowthroat Black-throated Green Warbler
Northern Parula Magnolia Warbler
Broad-winged Hawk Winter Wren
Hermit Thrush  

 

On the Boreal Life Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Black-throated Blue Warbler Hermit Thrush
Nashville Warbler Black-throated Green Warbler
Golden-crowned Kinglet Blue-headed Vireo
Hermit Thrush American Crow
Northern Parula  

 

We also observed a number of wildflowers in bloom:

Explore the Trails

The VIC trails are free and open to the public, from dawn to dusk, spring through fall. In winter, the trails are open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers for a fee. Day or season passes may be purchased.
