Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Heron Marsh Trail, Jenkins Mountain Trail, and the Boreal Life Trail on 23 June 2012. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 9:00 AM, when we met in the VIC building at the Paul Smith's College VIC. We saw or heard a total of 31 birds. Highlights of the walk included a good view of a Lincoln's Sparrow and Song Sparrow, and some excellent close-up views of a Palm Warbler on Barnum Bog. We also heard a Black-backed Woodpecker and encountered hundreds of tiny, just-hatched toads on the Boreal Life Trail, near the Barnum Pond overlook.

In the parking lot and near the VIC building, we saw or heard the following birds:

Blue-headed Vireo Red-eyed Vireo
American Goldfinch American Robin
Red-eyed Vireo  

 

On the Heron Marsh Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Ovenbird American Black Duck
Blue-headed Vireo American Goldfinch
Eastern Phoebe Wood Duck
Nashville Warbler Swamp Sparrow
White-throated Sparrow Red-winged Blackbird
Ring-necked Duck Winter Wren
Yellow-rumped Warbler Blackburnian Warbler

 

On the Jenkins Mountain Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Black-throated Green Warbler Blue-headed Vireo
Red-eyed Vireo Blue Jay
Ruffed Grouse Yellow-rumped Warbler
Nashville Warbler Song Sparrow
Northern Parula  

 

On the Boreal Life Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Black-throated Green Warbler Northern Parula
Winter Wren Black-throated Blue Warbler
Nashville Warbler Golden-crowned Kinglet
White-throated Sparrow Black-capped Chickadee
Red-shouldered Hawk Common Yellowthroat
Hermit Thrush Palm Warbler
Purple Finch Song Sparrow
Lincoln's Sparrow Cedar Waxwing
Yellow-rumped Warbler Black-backed Woodpecker
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker  

 

We also observed a number of wildflowers in bloom or in bud:

Shinleaf White Water-lily
