Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Jenkins Mountain Trail and the woodland portion of the Boreal Life Trail on 30 June 2012. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 9:00 AM, when we met in the VIC building at the Paul Smith's College VIC. We saw or heard a total of 25 birds. Highlights of the walk included some excellent views of the often heard, but seldom seen Winter Wren on the Hemlock Connector (between the Jenkins Mountain Trail and the Boreal Life Trail) and some close-up views of a Hermit Thrush. We also heard a Chestnut-sided Warbler in the second-growth area on the Jenkins Mountain Trail and saw a snapping turtle on Barnum Brook.

In the parking lot and near the VIC building, we saw or heard the following birds:

Blue Jay Red-winged Blackbird
American Robin Blue-headed Vireo
Ovenbird Northern Parula
Chipping Sparrow Hermit Thrush
Black-capped Chickadee Red-Breasted Nuthatch
Magnolia Warbler Red-winged Blackbird

 

On the Jenkins Mountain Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Black-throated Blue Warbler Black-throated Green Warbler
Northern Parula Blackburnian Warbler
Winter Wren Nashville Warbler
Scarlet Tanager Yellow-rumped Warbler
Common Yellowthroat Ovenbird
Hermit Thrush American Crow
Chestnut-sided Warbler Swamp Sparrow
Purple Finch  

 

On the Hemlock Connector (between the Jenkins Mountain Trail and the Boreal Life Trail), we saw or heard the following birds:

Winter Wren Northern Parula
White-throated Sparrow Black-capped Chickadee

 

On the wooded portion of the Boreal Life Trail (from the Hemlock Connector to the gazebo by the VIC parking lot), we saw or heard the following birds:

Northern Parula Hermit Thrush
Black-throated Blue Warbler Nashville Warbler
Blackburnian Warbler Blue-headed Vireo
Black-throated Green Warbler  

 

We also observed a number of wildflowers in bloom:

Common Wood Sorrel Spreading Dogbane
Partridgeberry
