Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Jenkins Mountain Trail and the Boreal Life Trail on 16 June 2012. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 9:00 AM, when we met in the VIC building at the Paul Smith's College VIC. We saw or heard a total of 30 birds. Highlights of the walk included some good views of a Yellow-rumped Warbler, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, and a Northern Parula We also had a close encounter with an enraged mother Ruffed Grouse, who escorted us all the way to Barnum Bog from the intersection of the Boreal Life Trail and the Hemlock Connector.

In the parking lot and near the VIC building, we saw or heard the following birds:

Red-eyed Vireo Hermit Thrush
Winter Wren Chipping Sparrow
Northern Parula Ruffed Grouse
Red-Breasted Nuthatch Broad-winged Hawk
Black-throated Green Warbler  

 

On the Jenkins Mountain Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Winter Wren Black-throated Green Warbler
Chipping Sparrow Red-eyed Vireo
Ovenbird Golden-crowned Kinglet
Northern Parula Black-throated Blue Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler Northern Parula
Black-capped Chickadee American Crow
Tree Swallow Blackburnian Warbler

 

On the Boreal Life Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Black-throated Green Warbler Winter Wren
Ovenbird White-throated Sparrow
Nashville Warbler Northern Parula
Golden-crowned Kinglet Black-throated Blue Warbler
Brown Creeper American Robin
Red-eyed Vireo Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Ruffed Grouse Palm Warbler
Black-capped Chickadee Blue Jay
Yellow-rumped Warbler Pine Siskin
Lincoln's Sparrow Song Sparrow
Common Yellowthroat Swamp Sparrow

 

We also observed a number of wildflowers in bloom or in bud:

Grass Pink Labrador Tea
Bunchberry Wild Sarsaparilla
Cotton Grass Pitcher Plant
Sheep Laurel Marsh Cinquefoil
Spreading Dogbane Yellow Pond Lily
White Fringed Orchid
