Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Heron Marsh Trail and the Boreal Life Trail on 30 July 2011. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 8:00 AM, when we met at the parking lot at the Paul Smith's College VIC.

The highlight of the walk was a series of excellent views of two Great Blue Herons, flying over and resting in Heron Marsh, plus some very good views of an American Bittern.

The walk began with a sighting of two Common Loons and a Black-capped Chickadee at the VIC parking lot. We also heard an American Goldfinch.

On the Heron Marsh Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Golden-crowned Kinglet Red-winged Blackbird
Mallard Hermit Thrush
Great Blue Heron Wood Duck
Blue Jay American Bittern
American Crow Cedar Waxwing
Ring-necked Duck

On the Boreal Life Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Winter Wren Nashville Warbler
Northern Flicker Blue Jay
Hermit Thrush Black-capped Chickadee
White-throated Sparrow Cedar Waxwing

The VIC trails are free and open to the public, from dawn to dusk, spring through fall. In winter, the trails are open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers for a fee. Day or season passes may be purchased.
