Adirondack Birding:
Teddy
Roosevelt Bird Walk
29 June 2011
On 29 June, Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk which was part of the "TR" Birding Series. We met at the Paul Smith's College VIC at 8 AM and covered the Barnum Brook Trail and the Boreal Life Trail. The day was overcast, but at least it was not raining, and we could hear the birds. We also saw two North American River Otters.
We heard and/or saw 24 species of birds:
- Red-eyed Vireo
- Blue-headed Vireo
- American Bittern (We saw two bitterns. One tried to land, apparently on the territory of a Red-winged Blackbird; and the spunky blackbird harassed the larger bird until he flew away.)
- Red-Breasted Nuthatch
- Common Yellowthroat
- Northern Parula
- Hermit Thrush (We got some good views of this bird, which took exception to our presence and embarked on a long series of alarm calls.)
- Black-Backed Woodpecker
- Winter Wren
- White-throated Sparrow
- American Robin
- Cedar Waxwing
- Black-throated Green Warbler
- Black-capped Chickadee
- Ovenbird
- Lincoln's Sparrow
- Palm Warbler
- Tree Swallow
- Nashville Warbler
- Common Loon
- Red-winged Blackbird
- Swamp Sparrow
- Wood Duck
- Ring-Necked Duck (with 9 ducklings)
We also identified a large number of plants and wildflowers, including:
- Rose Pogonia
- Sheep Laurel
- Grass Pink
- Labrador Tea
- Bog Laurel
- Pitcher Plant
- Bog Rosemary
- Sun Dew
- Tamarack (American Larch)
- Black Spruce
- Spreading Dogbane
- Bracken Fern
- Wood Fern
- Hop Clover
- Twinflower
- Wild Columbine
