Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Jenkins Mountain Trail and the Barnum Brook Trail on 27 July 2011. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 8:00 AM, when we met at the parking lot at the Paul Smith's College VIC.

The highlight of the walk was the bird activity at the VIC parking lot, where the trees were alive with birds:

Red-eyed Vireo Black-capped Chickadee
Chipping Sparrow Red-breasted Nuthatch
Magnolia Warbler Pine Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler Cedar Waxwing
Northern Parula Black-throated Blue Warbler

In the woods on the Jenkins Mountain Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Red-eyed Vireo Ruby-throated Hummingbird
Black-throated Green Warbler American Robin
Hermit Thrush Black-capped Chickadee
Golden-crowned Kinglet Black-throated Blue Warbler
Scarlet Tanager Cedar Waxwing
White-throated Sparrow Downy Woodpecker

On the Heron Marsh Overlook on the Barnum Brook Trail, we heard or saw the following birds:

Swamp Sparrow Common Loon
Blue Jay Cedar Waxwing
Wood Duck American Black Duck
Red-winged Blackbird White-throated Sparrow

The VIC trails are free and open to the public, from dawn to dusk, spring through fall. In winter, the trails are open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers for a fee. Day or season passes may be purchased.
