Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a bird walk on the Boreal Life Trail,and the Heron Marsh Trail on 13 July 2011. The walk was part of the "TR" Birding Series. The walk began at 8:00 AM, when we met at the parking lot at the Paul Smith's College VIC. The highlight of the walk was an excellent view of several Gray Jays on the Boreal Life Trail,on the hill above the Barnum Pond Overlook.

At the parking lot (one of the birding hot spots at the VIC!), we saw or heard the following birds:

Cedar Waxwing Blue-headed Vireo
Ovenbird Red-eyed Vireo

 

On the Boreal Life Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Northern Flicker Nashville Warbler
Black-throated Green Warbler Winter Wren
Black-throated Blue Warbler Cedar Waxwing
Hermit Thrush Red-eyed Vireo
Golden-crowned Kinglet Chimney Swift
Lincoln's Sparrow White-throated Sparrow
Gray Jay Alder Flycatcher
Turkey Vulture Magnolia Warbler

On the Heron Marsh Trail, we saw or heard the following birds:

Broad-winged Hawk Wood Duck
Red-winged Blackbird

Explore the Trails

The VIC trails are free and open to the public, from dawn to dusk, spring through fall. In winter, the trails are open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers for a fee. Day or season passes may be purchased.
