Italy Study Abroad Trip

Join Professors Kelly Cerialo, Kate Glenn, and Paul Smith's College students who traveled to the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy during the summer of 2015 for a three-week study abroad program.  The presentation will include a discussion about the Adirondack and Apennine Sustainable Parks and Communities Project as well as the sustainable tourism marketing plan that thirteen Paul Smith’s College students developed in order to attract American tourists to the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park in Italy. 

The discussion will feature:

• Cultural narratives and conflicts in the region
• Cross-cultural marketing strategies used to promote the region while preserving the social, economic, and environmental landscape
• The recent designation of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park as a Man and Biosphere UNESCO site as a rebranding opportunity for the park
• Photos and anecdotes that compare the sustainable tourism practices of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park to those of the Adirondack Park

Kelly Cerialo is a Professor in the Hotel, Resort, and Tourism Management Program in the Commercial and Applied Liberal Arts School at Paul Smith’s College.  Cerialo holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Relations/Mass Media Communication from The College of New Jersey and a Masters in Communication Management from the Annenberg School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Southern California. Research interests include cross-cultural marketing, organizational communication, new media, strategic corporate communication, and customer relationship management.

Katharine Glenn is a Professor of Environmental Studies and Sustainability in the Commercial and Applied Liberal Arts School at Paul Smith’s College.  She is also the Campus Sustainability Coordinator and Challenge Course Manager.  Glenn holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies and Minor in Women Studies from Green Mountain College as well as a Master of Science in Environmental Studies from Antioch University New England.  Glenn’s research interests include sustainable food system development, subsistence food systems, and food security in Alaska and the Adirondack North Country. 

Cost of the lecture: $5 per person. Free for Friends of the VIC. The Arm Chair Lecture series will continue every other Thursday through the winter. Supported by the Friends of the VIC.
