Birding the Adirondacks:
Warbler ID Workshop
20 June 2015
On 20 June 2015, Adirondack Birding Center Director Brian McAllister led a Warbler ID Workshop, including a one-hour slide show and a two-hour bird walk on the Logger's Loop Trail. The workshop began with a slide show presentation on warblers. We learned about basic techniques of warbler identification, including habitat, song, behavior, and appearance. Of the 56 species of warblers who migrate to the US in the warmer months, 26 species breed within the Adirondack Park Blue Line.
The presentation covered the following birds, providing close-up photos of each bird (courtesy of Larry Master), information on what habitat each bird prefers, song, typical behavior, field markings, where to look for the bird at the VIC and surrounding areas, and status of the bird.
After the slide show, we walked up the Logger's Loop Trail to sample some of the VIC's warblers. We saw or heard a total of 19 species of birds, including seven warbler species. The highlight of the walk was a series of extended views of a Northern Parula (pictured above) on the edge of the wetland area where the Logger's Loop Trail crosses Barnum Brook. eBird Checklist
